Ventura’s official name is San Buenaventura, which translates as “good fortune.” The county seat of Ventura County, the town is nestled between the sea and mountains and is flanked by two flowing rivers, the Ventura and Santa Clara. The area serves as a hub for a variety of local employers and organizations and is the site of the Ventura County Fairgrounds and the Majestic Ventura Theatre, both of which have hosted some of the country’s most iconic musical performances.
Famed for the quality of the local surfing, Ventura is a favorite spot for outdoor and sports enthusiasts in the region. With everything from golf to hiking to bird watching, there’s truly something here for every age, experience, and activity level. Ventura also boasts a burgeoning artistic community, with performing and visual arts woven into the fabric of the town and a number of public art installations and murals enhancing its already extraordinary natural beauty.
Ventura derives its name from Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782 as the ninth and last mission established by Junipero Serra, the first leader of the Franciscans in California. While the original bell tower and facade of the mission were destroyed in 1812, it was rebuilt and currently functions as a parish church in modern-day Ventura. The mission compound is included in historic tours of the downtown area.
Ventura boasts an eclectic variety of home styles, from small in-town bungalows to expansive estate homes centered on the area’s many waterways, beaches, and the harbor. Outdoor living is essential here, with year-round beautiful weather and the opportunity to create truly cohesive indoor and outdoor living and dining spaces.
