Thousand Oaks

As Ventura County’s second-largest city, Thousand Oaks makes up the core of the Conejo Valley and encompasses both the majority of Westlake and all of Newbury Park. Its name is something of a misnomer, because Thousand Oaks contains, in fact, tens of thousands of majestic oak trees spread throughout the area’s public and private lands.

Thousand Oaks has adopted a smart growth strategy to avoid the suburban sprawl and congestion so common to metropolitan areas. More than a third of the city is composed of designated open-space nature areas. With close proximity to both the mountains and the coast, Thousand Oaks residents truly enjoy the best of Southern California outdoor living and recreation.

Thousand Oaks has a storied history with a variety of colonies and settlements. From its early roots as a Chumash Native American collection of villages, it was later a Spanish polity and a Norwegian colony, and many place names reflect the diversity of its early inhabitants. Thousand Oaks was incorporated in 1964 and has grown primarily through annexing the neighboring communities of Westlake and Newbury Park.

Thousand Oaks offers a wide variety of home styles, including mixed-use residential and retail development along the city’s downtown corridor. Here you’ll find a variety of terrains and natural elements offering spectacular views along with homes and neighborhoods featuring large lots and providing expansive outdoor living spaces.
